A new joint venture funded by the highly respected Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation is unveiling a prototype unit that can provide new capabilities in the areas of materials identification and sorting.
The BrimEX 001 is capable in real-time of identifying white powders that can travel through the mail, including dangerous powders such as anthrax spores, as well as quickly identifying materials at hazardous waste sites. The hyperspectral imager, which was made by U.S. partner Brimrose Corporation, and the next-gen software, provided by Israeli partner File X, already is being demonstrated for U.S. defense contractors. Industry sources place the potential market for such a unit at $2 billion in the United States alone.
The unit, which was funded as part of a $1.6 million award provided by the BIRD Foundation, also is generating significant attention in the plastics recycling industry. Billions of tons of waste from plastics have been generated, a number that is rising significantly every year. Only nine percent of plastics currently are recycled in the United States.
The BrimEX 001 already has successfully demonstrated that it can identify many different types of plastics in near real-time.
